Hyde Park Democratic Committee
“Common Ground for the Common Good”
Mission Statement:
The Hyde Park Democratic Committee works to elect and support officeholders who espouse Democratic values and are committed to meeting the needs of the people and communities they serve. In furtherance of this goal, the Committee endeavors to engage Hyde Park Democrats in the political process.
Hyde Park Democratic Committee Values:
• Government should be ethical, transparent, fiscally responsible, and responsive to the needs of the people.
• We seek inclusive policies that provide economic opportunities and a welcoming community, helping each resident and the collective Hyde Park community to thrive. We strive to treat each community member equitably and with respect, creating an environment where all are valued.
• Voter access to the polls must be protected.
• Active stewardship of the environment is both a moral and a practical imperative.
Committee Activities:
• We seek candidates who pledge to work for the common good at the respective local, regional, state, and national levels. Such candidates must exhibit strong leadership skills and public service interests guided by the values defined above.
• We support these candidates through petitioning, fundraising, campaigning, and informing the citizenry of the qualities that make these candidates worthy of their vote.
• We support our elected candidates by championing their ongoing work and providing them constructive feedback.
• We represent the Hyde Park Democratic Committee and Democratic platform issues, through media and participation in community events.
• We keep Hyde Park constituents informed of our officials’ judicial, legislative, and administrative accomplishments.
Focus of Local Government:
Our local elected officials work in either the Hyde Park or the Dutchess County governments. Each government entity has unique responsibilities.
Hyde Park Town government focuses primarily on our local infrastructure and safety. Our Hyde Park Town Board members oversee the Hyde Park police department, lighting districts, recreation programs, and administer our local zoning laws. Our local roads are managed by the Town Highway Superintendent in collaboration with the Town Board. Our Town leadership seeks to keep taxes under the NYS tax cap of approximately two percent annual growth and aggressively applies for grants to provide additional Town assets which include police and highway equipment, new street lighting, sidewalks, and vibrant Town center infrastructure as well as sewer infrastructure.
The Dutchess County government focuses on health, public health and mental health services, hard and human infrastructure, Hyde Park’s water and residential sewer districts, county parks, climate initiatives, youth advocate and senior service programs, homelessness and housing needs, crime and safety (Sheriff, District Attorney, county courts), and Medicaid and police reform initiatives.
